Building a logistics company from Singapore, without the romance

Singapore is a flattering place to build a logistics company. The airport works. The port works. You can have a serious meeting and a laksa and still make the evening cut-off. People outside the region think that means the region works. It does not. It means you have a clean desk with a complicated hinterland.

Aersure is four months old. Asset-light, cross-border, six APAC markets in the plan, not six markets already behaving. I am building it from here because this is where I live and because hubs are useful. I am not building it from here because I think Singapore is the product. Singapore is a node. The product is the process that survives the other nodes.

Building from Singapore without the romance means treating the hub as a tool, not as a personality.

The startup story is the wrong costume

The wrong question is how to make this look like a startup. Office. Deck. Words like disruption. Logistics does not get disrupted by a font. It gets slightly less dishonest if you write down the handoffs. That is the entire innovation, and it will not trend.

I started projects at 17. I know the costume. I can put it on. I am choosing not to, because the costume is how you skip the SOP. Investors and friends understand a story. Freight understands a cut-off. I am in the freight business.

Consulting last-mile for a year and a half taught me the other costume too, the corporate one. Big network, big claims, a green report. I do not get to hide in that either. We are small. Small is not an excuse to be vague. Small is a reason to be specific, because we cannot buy our way out of a messy process.

There is a version of this city that shows up in pitch decks. Glass, capital, gateway language. I live in the other version. The one where you still need the right permit, the right cut-off, the right person at the destination who will pick up when the paperwork is ugly. Gateway is a real function. It is not a personality. If I start selling the personality I will forget the function.

What the unromantic days contain

Partners. Too many of them, if you are doing cross-border for real. None of them will run your company. They will run theirs, on your cargo, if you let them. So you brief. You write. You check the scan, not the slide.

Customs. Paperwork. The quiet work of making a commercial invoice that is true in more than one language of bureaucracy. This is not admin. This is the product. If the paper is wrong, the parcel is a tourist in a warehouse.

Money. Asset-light still has a bill. Capacity is not free because you do not own the truck. You just get the invoice from someone who does. Anyone who sells asset-light as a way to avoid cost is selling a sentence. I will not do that here, including to myself.

And waiting. Then sudden movement. Then waiting again. That rhythm is the job. If you need daily theatre, this will make you bitter. If you can live in the rhythm, you can build something that still works when the story is quiet.

The goal

The goal was never to look like a founder in Singapore. The goal was to move things across markets on purpose, without pretending those markets are one region, and without buying a fleet to feel real.

Process before tools. Process before partners. I move things. The rest is infrastructure, including this city.

If that sounds smaller than a vision, good. Visions are cheap in December. A lane that still works in January is not. That is what I am building. No romance required.
