Another day, another shipping lane
Another day, another shipping lane. That is not a complaint. It is the calendar. You open a path from here to there, you think you have added a product, and then you discover you have added a new way to wait.
Aersure is a few months old. Asset-light, cross-border, run from Singapore. The work is not a launch video. The work is a lane. Origin, export, fly or haul, import, last mile, money, exception. Then you do it again for a different pair of countries and pretend you can copy the first one. You cannot copy the first one. That is the lesson that arrives on week two, whether you asked for it or not.
A lane is not a line on a map. It is a chain of people who do not work for you, doing a sequence you have to own anyway.
The wrong question is are we live
Live is a status. Live means a partner took your cargo once. The useful question is what happens the second time, when the invoice is slightly wrong, the flight is rolled, the last-mile rider cannot find the unit, and the customer has a tracker you gave them in a moment of optimism.
I used to think opening a lane was a commercial event. It is an operating event. Commercial is the easy meeting. Operating is the one where you find out your "cover" in the destination market is a person with a phone and a cousin, or a serious company that will still not think for you.
You cannot scale a sentence like "we do Singapore to X now." You can only scale the SOP for that pair, including the ugly branch. If you skip the ugly branch, the lane will teach it to you in front of a customer.
What a lane is made of
Paperwork that is boring until it is not. A cut-off that is earlier than the sales team wanted. A ground handler who is a different company from the airline, which is a different company from the last-mile network, which is a different company from you. Asset-light means you live in those gaps. The job is to make the gaps explicit, not to hide them under a logo.
Visibility is part of the product. If they cannot see the shipment, they do not trust you. I am already learning that the hard way, in miniature. A status that lags is not a tech problem first. It is a process problem. Who scans, when, and who is allowed to say "we do not know" instead of recycling "in transit."
Tools later. Partners as capacity, with a brief, not as a brain replacement. I keep repeating this because a new lane is a perfect excuse to forget it. You get excited. You sign. You hope. Hope is not a lane.
The unromantic pace
Some days you add a lane. Some days you spend the whole day on one shipment that should have been simple. Both days are the company. If you only like the first kind, do not start a logistics firm.
Six APAC markets is the shape of the work, not a coverage claim. Each pair of countries is a different process, even when the flight is the same. Singapore is a useful hub. It is not a substitute for the import process on the other side. I will keep opening lanes the slow way, because the slow way is the only one that still works when I am not in the room.
I move things. Today the thing is a lane that exists on a slide and is still earning the right to exist in the world. Tomorrow it will be another one. The romance is optional. The process is not.
